Who doesn’t like to dance? Okay, maybe some people feel awkward getting out on the dance floor, but one of the hottest gym classes around today is dance exercise. And when you’re dancing to exercise, the pressure is off on trying to look cool!
Many of you may have heard of or have even taken a Zumba® class since its inception in 2001. It’s still very popular and an awesome workout, but today there are other choices popping up everywhere to suit your style or music preference.
From combinations of hip hop and funk to "get your twerk on" to Bollywood that combines fast-paced Indian dance moves with hip hop gyrations, these workouts promise to get your heart pumping and your fat-burning furnace stoked.
And talk about extremes—there are also Barre workouts using the ballet bar to perform various challenging isometric moves, or pole dance workouts that combine dance and gymnastics to leave your body feeling tight and lean. For those who still feel uncomfortable dancing in a group situation, there are some great video and online classes that you can get down with right in the comfort of your home.
So, do a little research in your area to see what types of dance exercise classes are offered. You may just get out of that cardio rut and have fun doing it!
In order to avoid risk of injury, please seek advice directly from your physician, especially if you have existing medical issues, before beginning any exercise or nutritional program. Also, be sure to stretch after exercise to avoid muscle and joint tightness.
