Cooling Chia Agua Frescas

Summertime calls for refreshing, cool drinks to keep you hydrated even on the hottest of days.  Agua Fresca’s (or “fresh waters” in Spanish) are favorites in Central America and the Caribbean and can be found in bodegas, cantinas and stands around the country.


Agua Fresca’s are easy to make with a few simple ingredients-a favorite fruit, water, a sweetener of your choosing and add-ins such as lemon, lime, herbs and chia.  All you need is a juicer, blender or food processor to puree the fruit and cheesecloth or a fine-mesh sieve to strain the pulp if you choose to have a pulp-free drink. 

The great thing about Agua Fresca is that you can create any combination of your choosing.  You can use fresh or blended juice, adjust the amount of sweetener you use and even mix your juice with seltzer or club soda for a fizzy refreshing drink in place of sodas.

Here are some great refreshing Agua Fresca’s that we’ve been having in my home blended with the new Garden of Life Organic Chia Seeds for an added health boost!   No longer relegated to grow as hair on ceramic novelty heads, Chia is an ancient seed high in omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants and minerals like calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus.  It is also naturally Gluten-Free.

Chia is can be eaten whole.  When soaked, a gel forms around the chia which aids in lowering cholesterol while adding a nutritional boost.   Soaked Chia seeds can also act as an egg replacer for vegan cooking.

 

Watermelon Agua Fresca

4 cups diced watermelon

2 ½ cups water

2 Tbsp. Garden of Life Organic Chia Seeds

1 Tbsp. lemon or lime

For pulp-free: 

Combine chia and ½ cup of water and let stand for a few hours or overnight.  In your blender blend watermelon, remaining water and lemon/lime juice until smooth.  Strain into a pitcher through fine sieve/cheesecloth to remove pulp.   Mix in soaked chia seeds and water.   Stir, pour and enjoy! 


You can garnish with a bit of watermelon on the rind or a slice of lemon/lime.

With Pulp:
Simply blend all ingredients together in a blender.  Pour into a pitcher and refrigerate overnight.

Fizzy Chia Lemonade

1Tbsp Garden of Life Organic Chia Seeds

½  cup of water

Juice of one lemon

¼- ½ cup organic sweetener of your choice (I used organic cane sugar)

32 oz. seltzer or club soda (I use my Soda Stream machine)

 

Mix water and chia seeds and let them sit overnight.   In a sauce pan add sweetener and lemon juice and heat until blended/dissolved.  Let that cool.



To serve split chia & water mixture and lemon syrup between 4 glasses and fill with seltzer/club soda.  Garnish with a lemon slice/wedge or a sprig of mint or herb of your choice.   This is also great as a non-fizzy lemonade, too!

** for an added zing, you can put a slice of fresh ginger to the lemon syrup mixture, removing when cool.

Ok, my question is - do I strain the chia seeds after they soak? I just put the gel in my water after I strained the soaking mixture. Is this right or wrong?

No need to strain as the liquid will also flavor the water when blended.
