Ariana Hilborn's Acai Bowls

My sister turned my husband and I on to these during our last San Diego visit. I could eat Acai bowls all.day.long. She walks to this place for coffee and a bowl quite often: Captain Kirks Coffee I did a bit of tweaking to fit my nutrition needs, but play around with the recipe! They make a great breakfast or dessert and are super refreshing after a warm run.

Acai is one of the ‘Superfoods’ and you can find frozen, organic, unsweetened, packs at Whole Foods. I have also been able to find the Sambazon brand at some local grocery stores. They are located by the frozen smoothie packs.

Following is Dr. Perricone’s explanation of Acai benefits.

Açaí pulp contains:

  • A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
  • A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
  • An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.

The fatty acid content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. To make an Acai Bowl:
Blend one Acai pack with 1/2 of a banana and a bit of orange juice, cherry juice, or coconut water. I also like to add a scoop of Garden Of Life Raw Vanilla Protein to give my bowl an extra dose of nutrition.
Poor into a bowl. Top with granola, the other half of the banana, berries, Garden of Life Organic Chia Seed and Golden Flaxseed mix, coconut shreds, and agave syrup or honey. Super easy, super delicious and quite healthy!
