Musician Troy Akers Runs To The Challenge Of Marathons

Posted by: Garden of Life on Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Let me introduce myself! My name is Troy Akers and I've been a part of the band, The CO, based in Nashville for about 10 years.

Until last year, I wasn't that active. Truth be told, I lifted weights occasionally and used the treadmill at the gym—but, I'd never really challenged myself.  Last year, Garden Of Life sponsored athlete Thad Beaty and his partner at Sorted Noise Studios, Perrin Lamb, started talking to me about jumping on board for The Country Music Marathon. I had my reservations, and with some encouragement from Thad and Perrin, I knew it was time to step up to the challenge.

Thad and Perrin suggested the Hal Higdon training program. It basically sets out a weekly regime whether you are running a half or a full marathon. Since it was my first, I decided to go for the half-marathon (13.1 miles).

Every time I would talk to Thad or Perrin, they would always tell me the same thing:  Be sure to take it slow. I think for most people who get into running, they always want to try to push themselves, even if it's over the limit.

Really, the key to anything is to focus on your craft, your recipe, your run...slowly and efficiently. It's just like music, just like our band: you have to focus on the song to make it the best.  You can't just write the song and leave it because you must go back and edit. You take it slow to make it your best. In running, if you speed up faster than what you can handle, you kill your muscles and can injure yourself.

Just remember, whether you are training for a half or full marathon or just getting into running, it's best to take it slow. You can increase your speed as you train more and get more experience.
