Garden of Life Sponsored Athletes Go for the Gold in Sochi!

Posted by: Ursula Zamora on Monday, February 10, 2014

Since Thursday February 6 thousands of athletes from around the globe began gathering in Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.  The games bring the best of amateur athletes together to compete on the world stage for the coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

On Thursday February 6 Garden of Life sponsored athlete and Slopestyle Snowboarder Jessika Jenson took to the slopes at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on her quest for the Gold.  She made it into the Semifinal round, however on February 9 she was just shy of making it from the roster of 12 to the four competing for the Olympics first Slopestyle Gold medal.

Jessika is a 22 year old athlete from Idaho Falls, ID.  She has been a competitive snowboarder since the age of 14.  Although she never had lessons, the entire Jenson family went to the mountain every weekend to “pretend to know what we were doing… we eventually caught on,” she said.

We couldn’t be prouder of Jessika and know that this is just the beginning for her!

On February 8, sponsored athlete Gigi Marvin (#19, forward) and her teammates on the Women’s US Olympic Hockey Team took to the ice against Finland in Group A.  Team USA started the game with a goal 53 seconds into the game, followed with a second and third goal in the second period.  With only one goal by Team Finland, Team USA easily skated past Finland with a 3-1 win.

Team USA will go on to play Switzerland on Monday February 10 (at 5am EST live on the NBC Sports Network) for a chance to play in the Semifinals round.

Gigi is a US Olympic team veteran who played for the Silver Medal in the 2010 Games in Vancouver.  The National team plays on the international stage regularly and won the Gold in the IIHF World Women’s Championship against their rivals, Team Canada.  Gigi is also a member of the Boston Blades women’s professional hockey team, part of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.

Gigi’s former 2010 Olympic Silver Medal teammate Caitlin Cahow will also be heading to Sochi for the Olympic Games, however not as an athlete.  Cailtin was named as part of the Official United States Delegation and will be attending the final days of the games as well as represent the United States at the official Closing Ceremonies.
