Homemade Almond Butter

I've been doing a lot of experimenting with my new Vitamix blender, and was inspired by Sponsored YOLO Board Athlete Kacie Wallace to make amazing blends of nut and seed butters.

I started with the recipe from the Vitamix website, but adjusted it using coconut oil instead of canola oil.  I also took a little more time in blending the butter to get it to the desired consistency.  Patience is definitely needed when making nut butters, but its so worth it!


Almond Butter
  • 3 cups (440 g) unsalted roasted almonds
  • ΒΌ cup (60 ml) canola oil (I substituted with Garden of Life Coconut Oil)


  1. Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid.
  2. Select Variable 1.
  3. Turn machine on and slowly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High.
  4. Use the tamper to press the ingredients into the blades.
  5. In 1 minute you will hear a high-pitched chugging sound. Once the butter begins to flow freely through the blades, the motor sound will change and become low and laboring. Stop machine.
  6. Store in an airtight container. It can also be frozen for longer storage.

This recipe has been written for the Vitamix 5200 with Standard 64-ounce container. If you are using a different Vitamix machine or container size, you may need to make adjustments to the Variable Speed, processing time, and/or ingredient quantities. 

For food processor users, you will use an S Blade and blend to the desired consistency.

Inspired by Kacie, I also blended in some sunflower seeds for additional depth of flavor in the almond butter as well as a few dashes of cinnamon to taste.  Once I had the consistency of nut butter I wanted, I hand blended in some whole sunflower seeds, dried blueberries and cherries as well as a tablespoon of Garden of Life Raw Organics Ground Flax and Chia Seed blend.  In another later batch, I simply added a scoop of Perfect Food Raw Real Raw Cacao powder for a chocolately greens powerhouse spread!

I'm in love because the results gave me the freshest, most smooth and luxurious tasting almond butter I've ever had!  I actually find myself just eating a spoonful and savoring it!

You can experiment with the nuts and seeds that work for your diet to make your own nut butters at home.  Let us know what you try!
