It's spring again, and for many of us it's time to think about summer and how we look. For me spring becomes that magical time of the year when I feel a need to detox or cleanse. In the past I have done extensive juice fasts, the master cleanse or other detoxes that left me with no energy and on the toilet. This year, my goal is to stay healthy while maintaining a strict vegan diet, and to lose weight, and gain muscle. I've been a sometimes vegan for about a year now, and my weight tends to fluctuate. Let's actually take it back 4 years, when I gained 30 pounds in one year because my new husband wanted 'man food'. Trying to accommodate and be the good new wife, I fried chicken, baked bread and incorporated foods into my diet that had never been there prior to our nuptials. What I noticed is that fats and sugars become highly addictive. I finally told my husband enough is enough, during year two, and started making healthier alternatives. Now he loves quinoa, and I'm stuck losing the weight.
After trying my usual methods of extreme measures to jump start weight loss and healthy eating, I noticed that I lost weight initially but gained some of it back and then plateaued, after the extended juice fasts or master cleanse etc. ended. No matter how much I worked out, it became harder to lose weight, and I lost a great deal of muscle tone in the process. I learned that being a vegan or even vegetarian meant that you had to make sure you were getting enough protein, I clearly was not. After trying several not so great tasting vegetable proteins, I was introduced to Garden of Life Raw Protein. I was hooked! I also started looking into everything they made from supplements to detox's.
I just finished The Wild Rose Detox last week and I feel amazing. The detox itself was not too harsh, and made me feel light and energized. I'm now on my healthy eating and exercising routine and feeling great. I count my calories with a wonderful app called calorie count (www.caloriecount.com). I used to think counting calories was a bit nuts, but now I understand my nutrition more since I see it written down daily. This app also makes it possible to scan barcode's on food to get nutritional facts, and it gives me a complete daily breakdown of my protein, fats, carbohydrates, sugars and vitamins.
My main concern is getting the amount of protein I need to do serious vegan bodybuilding, and cross training (I love weightlifting). My goal is to eat a minimum of 100 grams of protein daily. At first I thought this would be difficult and boring but thanks to Garden of Life protein supplements, and the many varieties and flavors they come in each day is an adventure. I usually take the Marley Coffee Raw Fit in the morning after a workout, The Raw Protein around lunch time, and The Meal Replacement around dinner. I have learned to make some pretty cool recipes. My favorite is my Pumpkin Custard (and yes I will share the recipe)
I'm taking 6 months or more to complete my fitness goals. I will be sharing my story, recipes and tips here once a month, until I reach my them. I hope you will follow.
