Lose Those Love Handles

Lose Those Love Handles

You probably know this already, but your metabolism and blood sugar levels both play significant roles in proper weight management, including losing those love handles. But just what are those roles?

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy your body needs to function, including basic functions. The number of calories the body uses for basic functions is called your basal metabolic rate. Two other factors are crucial in how many calories you burn daily—thermogenesis, or the function of digesting, absorbing, transporting and storing the food you eat— and physical activity or exercise.

Many things can slow your metabolism down, however. For instance, aging—after age 30—decreases muscle and increases fat content for your overall weight and slows down calorie burning. Likewise, stress can chemically and hormonally alter metabolism through stress hormones such as cortisol, opening the door to craving—and eating—junk foods. That’s a double-edged sword, too, since a processed food or junk food diet can put the brakes on your metabolism. Hormonal shifts such as menopause can also slow down metabolism.

And speaking of hormones. . . one hormone, insulin, is key to weight management, since it regulates blood sugar levels in the body. In turn, blood sugar levels affect how hungry and energetic we feel, and they also determine whether we burn fat or store fat—all of which factor into our weight.

For maximized health and weight management, the goal is to maintain stable blood sugar levels and to avoid blood sugar spikes and plummets that are caused by unhealthy eating of sugars, carbs (which turn to sugar), bad fats and more. Interestingly, fucoxanthin, a powerful carotenoid antioxidant from a unique brown seaweed, and green coffee bean extract pack a one-two punch to help boost metabolism while keeping blood sugar levels in balance. One combination of these two ingredients was studied—a “Gold Standard” study—over a 16-week period in 150 overweight and obese Eastern European women following an 1,800-calorie-per-day diet.  Amazingly, those taking this combo lost 14.5 pounds on average—compared to only three pounds for those taking the placebo—and their metabolism was increased without having any stimulant effect.

Likewise, a RAW, decaffeinated green coffee bean extract that’s 50 percent chlorogenic acid has been shown to slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream after meals to balance blood sugar levels. It’s been the subject of six studies, including a Gold Standard, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study featuring 50 participants with a BMI of 25 or higher. On average, those taking this green coffee bean extract lost 10.9 pounds over a 60-day period, while the placebo group lost only 5.4 pounds. Additionally, it supported the body’s natural ability to metabolize sugars rather than covert them to fat storage—helping weight loss and body slimming. Once again, this was all accomplished without stimulant effects.

In short, they can help you get a handle on your metabolism and blood sugar levels to support losing those love handles.
