Vegan Values

By now, we all know that one’s diet is a personal choice. There are a variety of healthy diets, and the vegan diet is one of them. And although the reasons for becoming vegan are numerous, there are health-related and ethical values that surround it.

Again, everyone’s experience is different, but here are some of the reasons why many choose to become vegan.

First of all, veganism is healthy. Vegans not only do not eat meat or meat products, but they also avoid food from animals, such as eggs, dairy products and honey. Likewise, vegans won’t use any animal-tested goods, including cosmetics.

The vegan diet alone has tremendous health value, since it’s a plant-based diet that is packed with vitamins and minerals, is low in fat and cholesterol, and is high in fiber. By eating a vegan-based diet rich in plants, the risk for some chronic diseases is decreased.  Additionally, many who follow a vegan diet are free from some food allergies which can plague numerous people. For example, dairy, eggs, fish and shellfish are among the most widespread food allergies, but vegans, by design, avoid all of those.

Some of the other health benefits noted when eating the vegan diet are that vegans also often have healthier hair and clearer, tighter and more glowing skin as well as a lower body weight.

Then there’s the value vegans have for our earth and for life within it, including the lives of animals and animal rights. As part of the natural world, vegans choose to have their actions and choices—diet and otherwise—have the most beneficial effect on the earth and its constituents as possible. By doing so, there is a strong sense of ethics, inner strength and peace surrounding their diet and lifestyle choices. Vegans do their part to make our earth a better place for everyone and everything in it.

Part of why vegans choose this diet and lifestyle is that it advances the cruelty-free cause. By avoiding animal products in their diet, it lessens the market for animal products. If everyone did that, then it could decrease or even ultimately eliminate the slaughter of animals for food. In turn, vegan choices help to make for a more environmentally friendly world. Additionally, it is believed that the livestock industry alone is wreaking havoc on our environment through deforestation and through water shortages. Again, veganism can help make a difference on those fronts as well.

As mentioned at the start, diet and lifestyle choices are highly personalized. Many vegans are strict vegans, while others periodically eliminate meat and dairy for health purposes or other reasons.

Whatever diet you embrace, however, just know that there are numerous vegan values to glean from.
