Issue 57: Whose Crazy Idea Was It To Make New Year's Resolutions?

Will you be resolute or just making resolutions this New Year?

You know the drill. Each year most of us are well-intentioned and boldly announce our New Year’s resolutions—verbally committing ourselves to some form of improvement or attaining a personal goal.

And while most people have a serious resolution that they ascribe to, there are some folks who take a lighter (and narrower) approach to the whole idea of resolutions and have these to offer:

“I will no longer waste my time reliving the past; instead, I will spend it worrying about the future.”

“I will do less laundry and use more deodorant.”

“I will avoid taking a bath whenever possible and conserve more water.”

“I will try to figure out why I really need nine e-mail addresses.”

“I will stop sending e-mail, Instant Messages, and text messages to the same person I am currently on the phone with.”

“I will read the manual… just as soon as I can find it.”

While we probably can identify with some of these, most of us fall into the first category of resolution-makers—the ones who seriously want to improve some area of their lives. To illustrate, here are a few of the most heard New Year’s resolutions:

  • Lose weight
  • Pay off debt
  • Save more money
  • Get in shape
  • Eat better
  • Get a better education
  • Reduce stress
  • Think of others more

And those are some pretty noble resolutions. It’s too bad that most won’t come to fruition--unless the person is really determined to see them through.

Here’s a thought: instead of making resolutions, maybe we should just become resolute in our ways—determined to follow through with our goals no matter what. In other words, we purposefully go about our lives so that we can achieve what we have set out to do.

Will we have setbacks or intermittent discouragement? Yes, but that’s only temporary and should not be enough to dampen our enthusiasm and our resolve to reach the goal.

Make this year different. If it’s a few pounds you want to lose, then do it—and don’t let anything or anyone stop you. If it’s eating healthier, then make a commitment to buy and eat only the foods that are good for you. If it’s finally getting yourself in tip-top physical shape, then start today—and continue the habit for the rest of your life.

It’s a new year and it offers a clean slate for a new you. Go for it!
