Issue 7: Making a Clean Sweep with Detoxification

Toxins, which enter our systems through our food, air and water, and the accumulation of toxins in the environment, need to be cleansed or "detoxified" from our bodies. Detoxification is the body’s natural process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins via the liver, kidneys, and lungs, as well as in urine, feces, and through sweat. Sometimes, however, the detoxification process needs our cooperation through intentional diet and lifestyle choices—and Jordan Rubin has such a plan through a recommended dietary detoxification segment in his Perfect Weight America program.

Cleansing for your perfect weight includes a ten-day detoxification and cleansing program he recommends doing four times a year, which coincides with the seasons and is done quarterly—in January, April, July, and October.

In this dietary detoxification cleanse, you cleanse for your climate or "cleanse for your zip code"—eating foods to cleanse and cool you in the summer and foods that warm and cleanse you in the cold winter months. (Note: there is a scrumptiously cleansing chicken soup for those cold winter months.)

On Jordan’s recommended ten-day cleanse, you start out the first day on a mono diet—by eating either one type of fruit all day during the warm months or soup all day in the winter. In the summer, you will eat mostly raw foods; in the winter, you will eat mostly cooked foods. In the spring and fall, you will eat a combination of raw and cooked foods. And some of the best news of all is that you will probably not get hungry because during this ten-day detoxification diet because you will eat five times a day—every two to three hours. What a delicious way to jump-start a detoxification process!

Why Should I Detoxify?

The digestive system is designed to be the body’s source of growth, repair, and energy. Without proper digestive system functioning, the body cannot have optimal health. Eating the right foods helps the digestive system to work properly; however, the dramatic dietary and lifestyle changes that have occurred in our "modern" society—particularly over the last 100 years— have not been optimal for our digestive systems. Stress, reduced physical activity, consumption of processed foods, and exposure to chemicals can all negatively impact health.

A healthy gastrointestinal tract is essential to overall well-being. During an average life, 60 tons of food will pass through the digestive tract, and the kinds of foods eaten can make a difference.

Habitual intake of a diet high in refined and highly processed foods lead to accumulation of toxins, increased contact time, and damage to the lining of the gut due to constipation and higher pressures developing inside the bowel. In plain language, such foods gunk up the digestive tract and need to be removed. If the digestive system isn’t given a chance to restore itself through cleansing, then this critical system of the body that impacts immune health and nutrient absorption will not perform optimally.

This detoxification diet is a great way to take a break from the excess calories, starches and other items you are eating that might not be healthy—and, in Jordan’s estimation, is the best way to jump start your health. As you cleanse with the seasons, you may also cleanse away unwanted toxins and perhaps unwanted fat.

Before you embark on this cleanse, be sure to have the necessary foods and ingredients for recommended recipes for your ten-day detoxification diet so that you can cleanse perfectly—with no interruptions. (For the cleansing chicken soup recipe and other cleansing recipes, visit
