5 Picture-Perfect Ways to Spend Your Summer Staycation

5 Ways to Spend Your Summer Staycation
by Tracey Pollack

When you could really use a getaway but can't go too far away, treat yourself to a staycation for the best of both worlds. Just as its name suggests, a staycation combines the excitement and escape of a vacation with the convenience and comforts of home. Today, staycations are more popular than ever as not all locations are open and operating a full capacity. This budget-friendly, family-friendly alternative can be just as fun and relaxing as a traditional summer vacation with these thrilling staycation ideas.

  1. Play Tourist in Your Own Town

Since one of the best parts of travel is discovering new places, bring that experience home by exploring your own town, city or state. Visit the local tourist spots and check out the city’s attractions. To escape the responsibilities of daily life, treat yourself to a stay at a nice nearby hotel or bed and breakfast and get away from the chores and errands of your every day.

  1. Turn Dining into an Adventure

Discover the tastes and temptations of cultures around the globe by exploring a world of cuisines at local ethnic restaurants. Each night of your staycation, visit or order take-out from a nearby restaurant serving specialties from a different country or region of the world. This exciting culinary journey can whisk you off to distant places like India, Korea and Greece. You can also get a taste of the local flavor by seeking out various neighborhood eateries you’ve always wanted to try.

  1. Unplug to Unwind

Send your devices on vacation to really relax during yours. Be sure to let people know you’re on vacation so they can give you the space you need. Step away from your smartphone, only checking it quickly once a day. Leave your email worries at work by setting an out-of-office message. And sign off of social media so you can enjoy your own life. Once you disconnect from your devices, you’ll be able to connect with the people and things you love.

  1. Make Your Staycation an Event

You don't have to spend a lot to enjoy a lot of new experiences. Find out which local happenings are on the community’s calendar at this "different" time during your staycation, and then add them to your own.

Pack a Picnic

Give “dining out” a whole new meaning by enjoying a few good meals in the great outdoors. Simply pick up or pack up your favorite foods and take a seat in the open air. Bring breakfast to the beach, pack a picnic lunch in the park or dine al fresco beneath the stars. There’s something about the fresh air, cool breeze and change of scenery that makes meals feel much more special—whether it’s a fancy gourmet feast or the usual turkey sandwich.

When you’re ready for a vacation but a far-off trip is your last resort, settle in for a staycation to get away without going away.
