Since I have made the decision be more healthy, I have been paying attention to the difference between organic and non-organic (conventional) coffee. If I am going to eat organic, then why would I still drink two cups of coffee a day that is loaded with chemicals?
You may notice that organic coffee is turning up in more coffee shops and you are probably seeing more of it in grocery stores. It has become more popular, because of the full-bodied, natural taste. But, there is obviously more difference between organic coffee and your regular morning brew. (I hope you are not drinking coffee while reading this. Set it down, so you don’t burn your hand when you throw it…)
Over 1,000 chemicals have been reported in roasted coffee; more than half of those have tested as rodent carcinogens. There are 10 milligrams of known carcinogens in one single cup of coffee. Consider this: 10 mg is probably more than all the synthetic pesticide residues you could get from eating non-organic food for an entire year. In one cup! Can you believe that? And, let’s face it— most of us don’t stop at one single cup!
Coffee was historically grown beneath the shade trees and amongst crops. Unfortunately, many commercial producers of coffee discontinued this method. Now conventional coffee growers have opted to produce bigger crops in the middle of pesticide- and fertilizer-infested land. Today, chemical insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers are a requirement to sustain the coffee bean crops.
Organic coffee plants grow under shade trees, the way they are meant to be. The shade trees serve to purify the soil and prevent water contamination. They also double as habitats for birds that prevent pests from attacking the organic coffee crops. They are not sprayed with pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Coffee is known to boost endurance, stimulate your gastrointestinal tract and help improve long-term memory. Drinking a single cup of coffee that has been brewing for 20 minutes provides the body with 300 phytochemicals, which act as antioxidants and stay in the body for up to 30 days. And, if you take your coffee black, there are absolutely no calories!
Drinking organic coffee is not only pure and natural, but better for your health. If you are going to drink it every day, why not choose organic to ensure that you are reaping all the benefits? Conventional coffee has never proved to cause cancer or give anyone health issues because of the chemicals— but if you can avoid it, why take the risk?
