Dexter Fowler: Art Imitates Life

Dexter Fowler Chicago Cubs

In a prophetic scene from the movie Back to the Future Part II, Marty McFly sees a video hologram on top of a building that celebrates the Chicago Cubs as the 2015 World Series champions. Whether the movie’s prediction rings true or not, newly acquired center fielder Dexter Fowler can view it as just another reason he’s anxious to get his career back on track with the Cubs.

Acquired from the Astros in January, the seven-year veteran is expected to give the Cubs a significant boost as a consistent top-of-the-order hitter and a sorely needed on-base threat. While much of last season was devoted to rehabbing and recovering from an intercostal muscle strain, Fowler also addressed some health issues after tests revealed he was allergic to dairy and whey protein recovery drinks.

His wife, Alyia, was regularly using Garden of Life® RAW Organic Protein, so he decided to give it a try. The plant-based protein not only helped relieve his lactose sensitivities, but allowed him to gain 10 pounds during the off-season—a goal that had proven extremely difficult in the past for the 6’ 5”, 195-pound switch hitter.

When we connected with Fowler at the end of spring training, he was feeling better than ever. After winning just 73 games last season, most analysts wouldn’t bet on a Back to the Future Part II World Series championship for the Cubs, but adding Fowler to the lineup at least makes it a possibility rather than a fantasy. We asked him a few questions about how he’s making his health a priority these days and how it feels to be with the Cubs.

The Interview

Extraordinary Health Magazine:  How are Cubs fans treating you?

Dexter Fowler:  I can definitely say Cubs fans are some of my favorites in the country. Before spring training even started, they were welcoming me and making me feel like I was joining a big family. I’m just excited to run to the outfield at Wrigley and see them waving the big WIN flag!

Extraordinary Health Magazine:   What can fans and the team expect from you this season?

Dexter Fowler:  I think they can expect to see a stronger, fitter athlete. Going into this season, I feel amazing! I’m excited to get out there.

Extraordinary Health Magazine:  As a veteran player on a very young team, what can you do to motivate others?

Dexter Fowler:  The best thing I can do is give 1000%. I’ve worked hard during the off-season, and I hope it shows on the field.

Extraordinary Health Magazine:  What are some specific things you’ve worked on during the off-season to improve your game?

Dexter Fowler:  I took a lot of time to change everything about my lifestyle. I eat cleaner, and I train harder. Garden of Life is a huge part of this because I take a lot of the products from the multivitamins to the enzymes. I drink two shakes before games with either RAW Organic Protein or Perfect Food® RAW and Super Seed®. I’m taking my health more seriously as I get older, both mentally and physically, and that means making sure that I get all of the right nutrients in my diet.

Extraordinary Health Magazine:  What do you do to relax and get away from the rigors of the ballpark?

Dexter Fowler:  I spend a lot of time with my family. My daughter is 14 months old, so she’s got a lot of energy, and I have to be able to keep up with her! My wife and I try to take her to everything you can imagine—train rides, parks, aquariums. It’s been fun to watch her grow, and I don’t want to miss anything!
