What a small world. Here I am in a hotel room on the North Island of New Zealand and I picked up a magazine with a very compelling name, MINDFOOD. I came upon an article entitled: The Recipe for a Healthy Gut. Obviously, with a title like that, this is something I would be interested in reading! The article brought a smile to my face in this far off place for reasons that you will understand when you take a look.

What is so encouraging is the fact that the message relating our food choices to the health of the 100 trillion organisms living within us, our microbiome, and the relationship of the microbiome to our health and ability to resist disease represents a global change in perception. And it is a powerful message indeed.

Though I am far from home, it is clear that the health issues that plague the American population are anything but confined to our shores. Here, just as in the States, obesity, and all of its associated diseases are major health issues as well as financial burdens. But as we move forward with understanding how pivotal a role is played by the microbiome in terms of issues like obesity, it offers up a new level of opportunity to finally gain a foothold in our efforts to change the course of global health.
