Many of our friends and fans have been anxiously awaiting updates about our voluntary RAW Meal recall. During the last two weeks, Garden of Life and our Utah manufacturer have extensively conducted new rounds of product testing covering well over 1000 finished lots, bulk blends and raw materials. Throughout all of this testing, we’ve coordinated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, our suppliers and manufacturers and our own third-party experts.
We are now able to share with you that we’ve identified the likely source of Salmonellacontamination to be Organic Moringa Leaf powder from a supplier used only in RAW Meal. This source only supplies Moringa to the manufacturer of RAW Meal and we started using this material in September. This Moringa is not used in any other Garden of Life product or by any other manufacturer. This means there is no risk to any other Garden of Life product and no other Garden of Life products are affected. Only RAW Meal was exposed.
We are expanding our January 29th voluntary RAW Meal recall to include any lot of RAW Meal manufactured with this Moringa. We’re asking our retail partners to immediately remove these additional affected lots of RAW Meal product from sale. If you have purchased a RAW Meal product involving these lots, please return it to where you bought it for a full refund. A list of the additional affected lots can be found below.
With the information we have now, it is clear to us that this is the right thing to do. Just like the original recall – which we did without waiting for direction from the FDA – we are putting our consumers’ health first and acting out of an abundance of caution. We will always act in our consumers’ best interests regardless of what it means for us. That means that if we aren’t absolutely sure of a product, we won’t sell it. Period.
In order to prevent a recurrence of this issue, we removed Organic Moringa powder entirely from RAW Meal and have required our manufacturer to remove it from its facility. You will not notice a change to your favorite RAW Meal flavor.
We are also refreshing the label so that retailers and consumers will not have to wonder whether they are getting the new RAW Meal lots with Moringa removed. If you were a fan of RAW Meal, you will see a slight modification to the design which will help us avoid all marketplace confusion.
Regarding additional quality measures, we retained one of the Country’s leading microbiologists to review every test and every procedure. We are using this as an opportunity to review our entire sourcing, manufacturing and distribution system with the goal of making a safe system even better.
With these measures in place, we’re confident that our products are ready to be enjoyed and we are resuming manufacture of RAW Meal products effective immediately. Many of you have been asking when RAW Meal will be available again, so we can now say we are expecting to resume shipments within 4 weeks.
While we are heart-broken by this situation, we’ll fix this and be better in the end. Again, because it’s the right thing to do. Our consumers, families, and co-workers depend on our promise of safe and healthful food. Our first and highest obligation is to be worthy of this trust.
And, finally, we’ll learn from this. We are good at what we do and we pride ourselves on being a leader in this area. We will take this situation and use it as an opportunity to look at everything we do and look for ways to be better and to continuously improve.
