How To Make the Most of Your At-Home Herb Garden

Inspired by our Health Hacks video on home herb garden tips, we’re shedding some more light on how to store your herbs and keep them fresh.

Fresh herbs have the power to take mealtime to the next level. The good news is that you can easily grow your own herb garden from home (pro tip: the best herbs to grow inside are basil, mint, cilantro, dill, parsley, sage and oregano)!

There’s nothing more exciting than seeing your herbs bloom after you have been patiently awaiting their arrival. Once they are ready to be picked, you can start all the necessary planning for fresh, delicious meals! However, when mid-week rolls around and the leaves of your fresh mint plant have wilted, it’s a waste of homegrown goodness—and a major bummer.

Have no fear—with these simple storage tips, your herbs will stay fresh all week long (or maybe even longer).

STORING “SOFT” HERBS

One of the simplest ways to store soft herbs (we’re talkin’ basil, parsley and cilantro) is by cutting off the ends and then filling a jar with a couple of inches of water. Once you’ve done that, place the herbs in the jar and cover them with a Ziploc bag. Lastly, take a rubber band and secure the plastic bag around the jar. Store in the fridge and change the water every couple of days. This easy trick will keep your soft herbs fresh for up to two weeks.

STORING “HARD” HERBS

Hard herbs (rosemary, oregano and thyme) can be stored by placing them on top of a damp paper towel. Roll the herbs up in the paper towel and place them in a Ziploc bag or plastic wrap, and store in the fridge. It’s that easy!

STORING HERBS LONG-TERM

Chop up all the herbs you want to save for a later time and place them in empty ice trays. Then, pour olive oil or water over the chopped herbs in the tray and store in the freezer. Before using, make sure to leave them overnight so they can fully freeze. The next time you need fresh herbs in a recipe, pop one of the cubes out of the tray and place in recipe for cooking.

If you haven’t started your own herb garden yet, pick some up from the local grocery store or farmers market and implement tips to make them last longer.

Now you can say “goodbye” to wilted, wasted plants for good!
