GINGER ROOT
Zingiber officinale
Ginger (Zingiber spp.) is native to Asia, has a warming quality, and is used as both a culinary spice and a medicinal herb. The comforting qualities of ginger make it one of the best carminatives (soothing nausea and cramping), especially in the abdomen, intestines and uterus. Traditional medicines relied on ginger to address occasional upset stomach, biliousness and gas. Ginger has been widely used for morning sickness for generations. The phenolic compounds inginger are known to help relieve gastrointestinal irritation, stimulate saliva and bile production, and suppress gastric contractions as food and fluids move through the GI tract. There is a rich tradition of using fermented ginger in Asia as a superior delivery system; it is known to enhance the absorption of other botanicals.
